Well we went to the Cinco de Mayo Chihuahua Races in Delray this past weekend... And the winner was... NOT Chiquita!
Tho' she did give it a good try (for her 1st race ever) and ended up coming in 2nd Place in her Heat - only the 1st place Chis advanced to the Elimination Rounds and Finals. Here she is before the race with her Chi friends: ![]() Unfortunately I didn't have a photographer on hand so here is the play by play (verbally): 1. She was in the 11th Heat - racing against 4 other dogs 2. She was in the 2nd lane 3. When the gate opened NONE of the other dogs left their gate except her. She raced towards me at breakneck speed (I just knew she could run fast! - Whee!) 4. And STOPPED dead in her tracks 6 inches (yes I said inches) from the finish line! Now I know you are wondering... WHY - right? Well it seems her natural instincts took over - yep you guessed it - a previous participant in the lane (either during the practice or racing heats) must have went peepee in the grass right before the finish line in her lane, she smelled it and decided it was more important to leave her MARK i.e. her "call me sometime" card then to finish the race (she always has boys on her mind - that girl). No amount of calling, treat waving, etc, could get her attention at that moment. Thanks to this little stunt, she DID get an anonymous honorable mention in the Newspaper Article - it said "one Chi stopped to relieve itself" - How cool and embarrassing at the same time!5. While she was busy letting some future dog know she had "been there", the Chi in the 1st lane who had refused to initially leave the gate ran right past her and snatched 1st place out of her tiny little paws! Oh SO close! So needless to say we have decided to forgo racing for awhile and concentrate our efforts in the beauty / fashion field (after all she won 3rd Place at last month's meet-up) where we definitely have an EDGE - or at least that is what EVERYBODY tells us! HAHA BTW - Everything worked out well in the end cuz the 1st Place Final winner was a new Chi friend we had made that day and he is REALLY REALLY Fast! Here is Pico's pic with his ribbon and trophy. ![]() Annette |

Annette, what a great writeup, you had me in stitches! The glamorous Miss Chiquita apparently would rather be a fashion supermodel than an athlete. Her new pal Pico is a cutie!
